Aluminum Sulfate

Aluminum sulfate is a nontoxic, noncombustible, white crystalline chemical compound primarily used as a coagulating agent in the purification of drinking water. It is also used as a mordent in dyeing and printing textiles, as well as to regulate the pH of garden soil and for other industrial, agricultural and consumer uses. Aluminum sulfate is sometimes referred to as alum or papermaker’s alum in certain industries, although the reference is a scientifically improper use of the term.

Description

Aluminum sulfate is a water-soluble, odorless, white crystalline compound with the chemical formula Al2(SO4)3 and CAS 10043-01-3. It has a sweet, mildly astringent taste and is insoluble in ethanol. Aluminum sulfate may burn, but it will not ignite.

Aluminum sulfate is manufactured by reacting freshly precipitated aluminum hydroxide with the appropriate quantity of sulfuric acid. The resulting solution is then evaporated and allowed to crystallize. It can be delivered as white, lustrous crystals, pieces, granules, or powder.

Industrial applications include use in the manufacture and production of adhesives and sealant chemicals, non-pesticidal agricultural chemicals, to adjust pH of soil, as a flocculent in wastewater treatment, as a finishing agent, and manufacture of pigments and dyes.

Consumer applications include the manufacture and production of non-pesticidal agricultural products, building and construction materials, cleaning and furnishing care products, fabric, textile, and leather products, as well as paints, coatings, and personal care products.
