TCC’s ChemFlexx 108, benzyl benzoate, is the ester of benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid, with the formula C6G5CH2O2CC6H5. This easily prepared compound has a variety of uses. It is a colorless liquid, that is formally the condensation product of benzoic acid and benzyl alcohol. However it is a solid at temperatures below 17 ºC so insulated storage would be required.
The non-toxic compound is primarily used as a plasticizer in the manufacture of polymeric materials for commercial applications such as PVC and other plastics. However, benzyl benzoate is also used as a fixative in fragrances, a food additive in artificial flavors, as a solvent, and for a variety of medical applications for the health care industry and veterinarians.
