Critical Chemicals Alliance Aims to Bolster EU Chemicals Sector

Critical Chemicals Alliance Horizontal - The Chemical Company

The European Commission has launched the Critical Chemicals Alliance, a key part of its 2025 Chemicals Action Plan, to boost the competitiveness, resilience, and sustainability of Europe’s chemical industry. The alliance aims to address core challenges such as the risk of plant closures, trade disruptions, and lack of investment in vital chemical production. Its initial priorities include defining criteria for what counts as a “critical” chemical, mapping those critical molecules to bolster trade monitoring, and establishing early-warning systems for supply risks. It will also help coordinate EU and national investments by aligning funds toward high-priority chemical projects. The alliance is open to a broad set of stakeholders—companies, associations, investors, research institutions, and civil society—all of whom can participate in a General Assembly that meets at least twice annually. A Steering Board and expert working groups will drive work on trade resilience, innovation, and sustainable production.
