TOFA Grades and Specifications
Commercial TOFA is available in several grades differentiated primarily by rosin acid content, fatty acid purity, color, and iodine value.
Standard distilled TOFA is the most widely used grade, with good fatty acid content and controlled rosin levels. It is suitable for general alkyd resin production, dimer acid synthesis, and most lubricant ester applications.
High-purity and fractionated grades undergo additional processing to concentrate specific fatty acid fractions and reduce unsaponifiables and rosin to very low levels. These are specified for waterborne alkyd systems, clear coatings, and applications requiring tighter fatty acid profiles or better color stability. They carry a price premium over standard grades.
Higher-rosin grades are less refined and may be acceptable or preferable in certain applications, such as metalworking fluids, where the rosin fraction can contribute to foam suppression. In alkyd resin production, elevated rosin levels create clarity and compatibility challenges, so most resin formulators specify tightly controlled rosin content.

A certificate of analysis confirming these parameters for each lot is standard practice. If a supplier can’t provide it routinely, that is worth noting before you commit to a supply relationship.
In air-dry coating systems, oxidative crosslinking of unsaturated fatty acid bonds is what forms the film. Higher iodine value means more reactive sites available for crosslinking, which generally translates to faster drying and a harder, more durable film. Formulators working with air-dry alkyds should confirm iodine value against their formulation range before switching grades or suppliers.
TOFA Applications
Alkyd resin production for paints and coatings is the largest industrial end use. TOFA also serves as a primary feedstock for dimer acids used in polyamide resins and hot-melt adhesives, and it is a base material for lubricant esters, metalworking fluids, surfactants, and diesel fuel lubricity additives.
For coatings and resin applications, buyers typically specify standard or high-purity grades with defined iodine value, acid value, and color. For fuel additive applications, low-sulfur TOFA grades are specified to meet diesel fuel quality standards. The two applications draw from different parts of the grade range and have different specification priorities.
Sourcing and Supply Chain
European subsidies for bio-based fuel feedstocks have created sustained demand for crude tall oil and TOFA in the biofuel segment. This competes directly with industrial buyers for the same supply. It is a structural factor in the market, not a temporary fluctuation, and it has contributed to periods of tighter availability and higher pricing for coatings, resin, and lubricant buyers.
The practical implication is that relying on spot purchases works in a loose market but creates exposure when supply tightens. TOFA is a liquid at ambient conditions and is available in bulk tanker, ISO tank containers, totes (IBC tanks), and drums. High-volume resin manufacturers typically receive bulk tanker or railcar deliveries. Totes and drums suit mid-volume buyers or facilities without bulk receiving infrastructure. Your distributor should accommodate the delivery format your facility requires and confirm lead times for each.
Supply disruptions in TOFA can be grade-specific. When crude tall oil supply contracts, producers may allocate more output to higher-value fractions, meaning standard distilled grades can become difficult to source while premium fractions remain available. Knowing your distributor’s sourcing depth across multiple origins, and having a contingency plan in place before you need it, is more effective than scrambling on the spot market during a shortage.
