Markets, Rates and Demand: Data Centers Reshape the Construction Outlook

Markets Rates and Demand Horizontal - The Chemical Company

The U.S. construction market continues to be heavily influenced by the rapid expansion of data centers, driven by artificial intelligence, cloud computing and growing demand for digital infrastructure. The scale of investment is creating a notable source of construction activity even as higher interest rates and broader market uncertainty weigh on other segments of the economy.

Data center development is increasingly becoming a significant economic investment, with major technology companies and infrastructure providers committing substantial capital to new facilities, power generation and supporting infrastructure. This activity is creating demand across a wide range of industries, including construction materials, electrical equipment, engineered systems and specialty chemicals.

For the chemical industry, the data center build-out represents both a direct and indirect source of demand. New facilities require large quantities of materials used in insulation, coatings, sealants, adhesives, plastics, fire protection and other construction applications. The expansion of supporting power and utility infrastructure can also create additional demand for specialty materials and industrial chemicals.

At the same time, interest rates remain an important counterweight. With rates moving above 7% during September, financing costs continue to influence commercial construction decisions and broader business investment. Higher borrowing costs can delay projects, increase development expenses and put pressure on companies considering new capacity or capital-intensive expansions.

The result is a market characterized by both significant opportunity and continued uncertainty. Data center construction is helping support demand in areas tied to technology and infrastructure, but it does not necessarily translate into broad-based strength across every construction and industrial market.

For chemical manufacturers, understanding where investment is flowing will be increasingly important. While traditional construction activity may remain sensitive to financing costs and economic conditions, the ongoing investment in AI and data infrastructure could provide a relatively resilient source of demand. Heading into 2027, the balance between interest rates, economic growth and continued data center investment will be an important factor shaping the outlook for chemical demand.
