Summertime Freight Update & Challenges

Freight Update Horizontal - The Chemical Company

Freight markets continue to tighten across both domestic and international transportation, creating new challenges for shippers as peak season gains momentum. Recent market updates highlight rising transportation costs, constrained capacity, and the importance of proactive planning to avoid disruptions.

On the domestic side, truckload capacity remains under pressure as demand strengthens ahead of the July 4 holiday and the end of the second quarter. Spot market rates continue to climb, tender rejections remain elevated, and shippers are facing increased competition for available equipment. While diesel prices have eased slightly, capacity—not fuel—is the primary factor driving higher transportation costs. Intermodal continues to provide a viable alternative for less time-sensitive freight, helping some shippers manage costs while preserving truckload capacity.

Internationally, the Transpacific market has also tightened significantly. Strong import demand from Asia has kept vessel space limited, allowing general rate increases and peak season surcharges to hold. Carriers are reporting higher rollover risks as bookings outpace available capacity, particularly for shipments destined for the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts. Importers are being encouraged to secure bookings well in advance and build additional flexibility into their supply chain plans to minimize delays and unexpected costs.

Taken together, these trends underscore a common message: supply chain resilience depends on early planning, diversified transportation strategies, and close collaboration with logistics partners. Companies that anticipate capacity constraints and act proactively will be better positioned to maintain service levels and control costs throughout the busy shipping season.
